Let’s work together to reduce drowning related deaths for young children in Thailand

Dr Thaksaphon Thamarangsi

Thailand’s medical representative with the World Health Organization
In response to alarming death rate statistics, has called on local administrative organizations and schools to help limit loss of life by providing training to children to ensure their safety in the water.

With no government funded pools in our islands’ schools there is little opportunity for children in government schools to learn basic water safety. So we are blessed with beautiful beaches, but without swimming and safety classes, the sea and swimming pools are as much a hazard as a blessing for children.

We wish to do our part in our community to help our most vulnerable and so we have begun a project in Maenam to train water safety and basic stroke development for children aged between 6-10 from local government schools.

Spearheaded by professional lifeguards and swimming instructors Gary Sparkes and Bonnie Brunton in partnership with Oonrak International School and The Rotary Club the project  has 3 hours of pool time every Saturday between 12:30-15:30 for the classes.

We need Helping Hands

Can you spare between 1-3 hours Saturdays?

Assistant Swim-Coaches, Assistant Life Guards and any other helping hands possible. Assistants only need basic swimming ability and a good heart; our Head Coaches will teach the rest. Our Head Coaches will provide course training on site, for all helpers and as will also teach CPR and basic life support. Great skills to take home. All helpers welcome so feel free to come along and take a look before signing up.
